Proposed PSO Levy Increase

The Commission for Energy Regulation has proposed an increase to the PSO Levy of about €65 per year for businesses and nearly €20 for households. The public service obligation is paid by all consumers of electricity as a subsidy toward the development of renewable energy, indigenous fuels (peat) and for security of electricity supply.

The CER determines the amount required every year for the period October 1st through September 30th and estimates that the amount required to meet Government’s national policy objectives; the 2016/2017 amount required is set at €440.0 million compared with the 2015/2016 amount of €325 million, an increase of about 36%.

The proposal paper, which is available to view and download here: cer.ie/pso, attributes the increase to reduced wholesale power price, an increase of required renewable power in line with EU targets and more money for peat plants which did not recover monies during the 2014/15 period.

Interested parties are invited to review the proposed decision paper and submit responses to the CER by 27th June and a final decision will be published on August 1st 2016.
